EverNote #4 : Why does EverNote have fees for more than two devices?

[Evernote](https://evernote.com/) restricts its free tier to drive revenue by converting free users into paying subscribers. As of early 2026, the free tier is actually even more restrictive than you noted—it now officially limits users to one connected device at a time. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Here is why Evernote uses device limits as a primary "paywall":
1. Monetizing Core Utility
The ability to sync across multiple devices (e.g., a phone, a tablet, and a computer) is considered one of the app's most valuable features. By limiting this to a single device for free users, Evernote creates a clear "point of friction" that encourages heavy users to upgrade to a paid plan, such as the [Evernote Starter or Personal plans](https://evernote.com/compare-plans). [2, 5, 6, 7, 8]
2. Reducing Operational Costs
Every device synced to an account requires server resources to manage data consistency and background updates. Limiting free users to one device helps the company reduce the infrastructure costs associated with users who do not contribute revenue. [2, 9]
3. Recent Plan Changes (2024-2026)
Evernote's pricing and feature strategy has shifted significantly following its acquisition by Bending Spoons. [2, 10]

* Previous Limit: For several years, the free tier allowed up to two devices.
* Current Limit (as of August 2024): The limit was reduced to one device.
* Note & Notebook Caps: In addition to device limits, free users are now capped at 50 notes and one notebook. [4, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15]

How the Device Limit Works Now

* One at a Time: You can only be logged in on one device (Desktop, Mobile, or Web).
* Web Counts as a Device: Accessing Evernote through a web browser is considered one "device".
* Switching Limits: Free users can switch which device is active, but there are monthly limits on how many times you can "unsync" and "resync" different devices to prevent users from bypassing the rule. [1, 4, 10, 16, 17, 18]

Pro-tip: If you need to use Evernote on a second device occasionally without paying, you must log out of your current device before logging into the new one to avoid being prompted to upgrade. [19, 20]
Would you like help exporting your notes to one of the free alternatives we discussed earlier?
